In 1878, James Pearse carved a pulpit to the design of architect J.J. McCarthy for St. Mary’s Church in Athlone. When the richly ornamented stone pulpit was removed from the church, the carved panels, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, were saved, and are now displayed in the Pearse Museum, Rathfarnham, Dublin.
