I. A hardbacked foolscap-sized book: Collection of Letters Written to the Protestant Community at Littlemore or Received from them by Father Dominic, containing:

  1. Epistola Directo Professoribus Universitatis Oxoniensis ... Written by an amanuensis and signed by Blessed Dominic, ‘Ere pres de Tournay 5 Maji 1841, Dominique de la Mere de Dieu, Passioniste’. Is thirty foolscap pages long and in Latin.

  2. Oxford reply to 1, Epistola, quarto paper, twelve pages long, signed ‘Alumni Oxoniensis universitatis’, Latin

  3. An undated letter from John Dobree Dalgairns, Guernsey to Blessed Dominic, hoping that the time may come when they may see each other on this side of the grave, English

  4. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, 14 December [184?], ‘Not only have your hearts warmed towards us but our hearts have also been set on fire by the same flame.’

  5. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, 16 January [184?], ‘Your Rule has been received by me and others here with much interest ...’

  6. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, 3 October 1844, saying that he had not replied earlier because of work on the Lives of the Saints. He had had the pleasure of seeing Dominic at Littlemore. Asks for hairshirts etc.

  7. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, 16 November [1844], referring to ‘Mr Newman, who is always glad to hear news about yourself’.

  8. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, ‘Sunday’, [1845?], referring to W.G. Ward’s condemnation by Convocation.

  9. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, 20 September [1845], asking to come to Aston Hall to be received into the Catholic Church

  10. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, October 1845, hoping Dominic will come to Littlemore as intended

  11. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Littlemore, feast of St Francis [4 October 1845], begging him to come to Littlemore as there may be work for him to do

  12. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Oscott College, 1845, asking him to go to see a Protestant young man in London who wanted to see ‘what sort of a person a Catholic priest’ was. Refers to Father George Spencer.

  13. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Southampton, 15 November [1845] on his way to Paris and Rome. Refers to Dominic’s having visited Littlemore again and how glad they all were to see him.

  14. A letter from Albany J. Christie, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, 23 October 1845, addressed to ‘Revd and dear Sir’. Asks the recipient to tell Father Dominic that he had been received into the Catholic Church.

  15. A letter to Blessed Dominic from John Henry Newman, Littlemore, Third Sunday of Advent, 1845, saying that Wiseman had offered them Old Oscott House

  16. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Newman, 17 December 1845, saying that he and St John will come to Aston Hall from 31 December to 2 January

  17. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Newman, 23 December 1845, saying he was coming to Aston Hall to enjoy Dominic’s society, not to have work put on him. [Dominic had invited him to preach to the people.]

  18. A letter to Blessed Dominic from Dalgairns, Langres, 10 February [1846?], saying he is going to receive the tonsure.

1) a photocopy of a letter to Blessed Dominic from J.D. Dalgairns [1841], replying to Dominic’s letter in L’Univers;

2) a typed copy of the letter to Blessed Dominic from J.D. Dalgairns [1841], replying to Dominic’s letter in L’Univers

III. A handwritten foolscap document giving a copy of the letter Dalgairns sent Dominic in reply to his letter in L’Univers [1841]. Final reference to Archiv. Vatic. Spogli Acton, vol.3, ff.321 - 324.

IV. A folder containing:

  1. A handwritten copy of a letter from Blessed Dominic, Aston Hall, 16 October 1846 to ‘My dear madam’ [Mrs Louisa Canning], referring to her coming to see him at Northfield House, Woodchester

  2. A copy of a letter from Blessed Dominic, Aston Hall, October 1847 to ‘My Lady’, an abbess. [See number 5 below, a photocopy of the original. The Abbess was Dame Mary Benedict Macdonald, Abbess of Colwich Abbey.]

  3. A photocopy of B.595 of documents in the archives of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, a letter from Blessed Dominic, St Mary’s College, Oscott, to ‘carissimo signore’. Refers to Grace Dieu. Italian.

  4. A transcript of a letter from Blessed Dominic, Ere, 29 July 1849 to ‘Mgr le grand vicaire’. Says he must return to England on account of important business.

  5. A photocopy of a letter, found at Downside Abbey, from Blessed Dominic, Aston Hall, 18[?] October 1847, addressed to ‘My Lady’. [The original is the original of number 2 above. Note on a typed transcript: The Abbess was Dame Mary Benedict Macdonald, Abbess of Colwich Abbey.]
