RELICS OF BLESSED DOMINIC BARBERI CP:

Portable Altar Stone and Work Box used by Blessed Dominic as a Tabernacle
Altar Stone said to have been used by Blessed Dominic Barberi in Stone. On 8 July 1928 it was given to Fr Edmund by Fr Urban Young CP, working on the Cause of Blessed Dominic. The Altar Stone was given to Fr Urban by the Mother Prioress in Stone, who said it was used by Blessed Dominic and that he used to carry it about with him. [This is presumably the Stone that should be in the case but the bottom of the case is pulling apart.]

Blessed Dominic’s Profession Cross. This is the Cross given by Father Ignatius Spencer to Sr Scholastica Woods CP about 1863 and kept in her family until 14 September 1990, when Mrs J. Woods of Birchley gave it to St Anne’s Retreat, Sutton. The Woods were close relatives of John Smith, Founder of the Sutton Mission. See copy of family-tree.

Permission given on 19 November 1840 by Fr Seraphim of the Heart of Jesus, Ere, Belgium to Blessed Dominic Barberi CP to say Mass during his journey to England; with an addition from Edward Norris VG, London District, dated 28 November 1840 giving Blessed Dominic permission to say Mass in the London District for one week.

A snuff box said to have belonged to Blessed Dominic and to have been given to William Walmesley as a souvenir when Fr Dominic left Stone about 1849. It was given to the Passionists in Harborne, Birmingham prior to 1935 by Mr Walmesley’s widow, Elizabeth Walmesley. See undated [but post 1935] letter of her daughter, Wereburga J. Walmesley to the Passionist Provincial.

A blue silk case holding a small monstrance containing a very small piece of bone of Blessed Dominic Barberi CP. Authentification included and dated 27 October 1963. Is this the bone sent from his Beatification in Rome in 1963, which arrived in Sutton a short time afterwards? See Platea.

A porcelain, Staffordshire pottery, figure, about three inches high, mainly white, said to be a figure of Blessed Dominic Barberi CP. Belonged to Miss Bellasis of Deal, who bought it for 6d. In a second-hand shop. Is now a collector’s piece and Miss Bellasis was offered £50 for it. She preferred, however, to give it to the Passionists.

IN THE SMALL GLASS CASE

Handkerchief of St Paul of the Cross given by Fr Leo Kierkels CP, Superior General, to Fr Urban Young CP when, in 1927, Fr Urban took to Rome all the documents connected with the Cause of Blessed Dominic Barberi from the time when he had taken up the Cause as Vice-Postulator in 1912.

This sub-series comprises papers mostly relating to the ministries performed by Fr. Dominic O'Connor OFM Cap. in Oregon in the United States following his release from British detention in January 1922. The sub-series also includes records referring to Fr. Dominic's death in October 1935 and tributes and commemorations thereafter.
