St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: HISTORY: The Sligo Champion: Solemn Ceremony of the blessing and inauguration of the new retreat which took place on 18 April, 1945, Feast of the Patronage of St. Joseph..
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: copy letter from Owen Meredith Tweedy, St. Ermins, Westminister to Fr. Stephen Lavery, C.P. The family is agreeable to present the old bowl (now used as a holy water stoop in the octagonal church) to the monastery. Family tradition is that it was found under a big tree (now Bishop Harte's ash) which stood in front of the farmhouse door (see item under serial number 8138 in Photographic Archive for photograph of that tree). The bowl was treasured by the family because of its alleged connection with the old pre-reformation monastery at Cloonamahon.
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: letter from the Provincial Fr. Valentine, C.P., (at St. Mungo's Retreat, Glasgow) to the rector of Cloonamahon, Fr, Salvian, C.P., regarding the answers given to him (Salvian) by Fr. Cyprian on the canon law requirements of the proposed new public oratory at St. Joseph's following questions raised by Salvian in the matter (see item under serial number 8726). The position is even less satisfactory than he (Valentine) had thought. The agreement with the previous bishop of the diocese has ceded our right to a public church, questing, etc., even to have more than one Mass for the faithful on Sundays. Valentine asks, "What future is there for Cloonamahon?". In consulting the community on the future of Cloonamahon, they should be fully informed as to all that is involved and they should be given the opportunity of examining carefully our contract with the late bishop.
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: copy letter (typed on headed paper) from the Rector of St. Joseph's, Fr. Salvian, C.P., to the Bishop of Achonry. Dr. James Fergus. Salvian forwards, at the bishop's request, the site plans for the building of a public oratory and student house at Cloonamahon (items under serial numbers 8729 and 8730).
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: letter (typed on headed paper) to the Rector of St. Joseph's, Fr. Salvian, C.P., from the Bishop of Achonry. Dr. James Fergus. Bishop is appointing two clergy to visit the site of the proposed new public oratory and house of studies at Cloonamahon and to report to him. If report is favourable, there will be no delay (in granting permission for the building?) - see items under serial numbers 8728 and 8730.
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: printed form, signed by the Superior General, Fr. Malcolm, C.P. authorising the establishment of a quasi-retreat at Collooney in the Province of St. Parick.
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: further notes taken by Oliver Kelly, C.P., from MS of Owen Tweedy's book on the Tweedy family, which had been loaned to Oliver by Owen (see entry under serial number 8130 for earlier notes). The notes in this entry concern mainly the early families on the property.
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: copy (typed) of letter to the Provincial, Fr. Fergus, C.P., from the Bishop of Achonry, Dr. James Fergus, cocerning the intention of the Province to built a more becoming monastery than that now ccupied at Cloonamahon, together with a church (see items located under serial numbers 8723 and 8724). Bishop could not agrre to such a proposal, taking into account the effect this might have on neighbouring churches, even in the parish of Riverstown in the Diocese of Elphin
St. Joseph's Retreat, Cloonamahon: Collooney: carbon copy of letter from Fr. Cyprian, C.P., St. Mungo's Retreat, Glasgow to the rector of Cloonamahon, Fr, Salvian, C.P., enclosing replies to questions raised by him regarding canon law requirements and the proposed new public oratory at St. Joseph's. The questions asked were (1) "What is the status of the public ecclesiastical building at Clonamahon?": (2) "Has the Ordinary of the place the right to specify the precise location of the public oratory?": (3) "Could the ordinary insist that a new public oratory should stand on the foundations of the old structure?": (4) "May the Ordinary of the place specify the size of the public oratory": (5) "Must the ordinary consult the clergy of neighbouring churches, even in another diocese, before he gives or refuses permission for a public oratory in a particular place?" (6) "What is the meaning of the condition in the agreement ' The Bishop shall have the right to make regulations in regard to the Public Oratory' "? (See also item under serial number 8727.)
