A group of Capuchin friars in Kilkenny in about 1907. The title, ‘Conradh na Gaeilge’ (Gaelic League), has been superimposed on the original glass plate. Many of the Capuchin friars were fluent Irish speakers. Some like Fr. Augustine Hayden OFM Cap. and Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. were also enthusiastic members of the Gaelic League, regularly preaching in the native language in Gaeltacht areas. This group includes Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. (standing, first on the right) and Fr. Columbus Murphy OFM Cap. (standing, fifth from the left) who later ministered to rebel combatants in the 1916 Rising. Other friars in the group include Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. (standing, fourth from the left) and Fr. Bonaventure Murphy OFM Cap. (standing, third from the right).

File of newspaper cuttings covering the centenary celebrations of the inauguration by Fr. Theobald Mathew of the temperance campaign in April 1838. The file includes cuttings from the 'Irish Independent', 'Tipperary Star', 'Saturday Herald', 'Nationalist', 'Irish Press', 'The Pilot', 'The Standard', 'The Cambridge Chronicle' (Massachusetts), 'The Universe', 'Seraphic Home Journal', 'The Derry Journal',' Cork Examiner', 'Kilkenny Journal', 'Catholic Times', and 'Evening Echo'.
• The articles refer to the re-naming of the Church Street (formerly Whitworth) Bridge as Father Mathew Bridge over the River Liffey, Dublin, in October 1938, to various ceremonies held to mark the anniversary (particularly in Dublin and Cork, and in Thomastown Castle, County Tipperary, Fr. Mathew’s birthplace), and to the Father Mathew Centenary stamp designed by Sean Keating RHA.
• The file also includes an article by Bridie Maguire, ‘Noted Irish Sculptress / Mary Redmond, who wrought the figure of Father Mathew in O’Connell Street’, 'Saturday Herald', 9 Apr. 1938.

This ordinance took effect beginning on 15th August 1928. Father Stanislaus Kavanagh’.

Newspaper cuttings book compiled and annotated by Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. Printed stamp on inside front cover: ‘Franciscan Capuchin Library, Church Street, Dublin’. The pages have been numbered by Fr. Stanislaus. The book includes on pp 71-82; 86-92; 97-100; 123-124 numerous cuttings reporting on the 1916 Rising and its aftermath. Some of the reports refer to Fr. Augustine Hayden OFM Cap. and his ministering to Con Colbert.

He also refers to a letter or photograph of letter ‘written by P.H. P[earse] to Joe Pl[unkett], 1916, and which I gave you to keep. I promised a copy of it to Mrs Tom Clarke … I would be grateful if can would, at your convenience, make a copy of it and send it to her or to Miss Daly, Bakery, Sarsfield St., Limerick for her’.
